This June, the American Bar Association celebrated the 800th Anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta at Runnymede. Jeana Goosmann, CEO and Managing Partner of the Goosmann Law Firm, traveled to London and then to Runnymede for the commemoration on June 15th, 2015. Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, attended the event. The ABA has been committed throughout its existence to commemorating Magna Carta due to the significant role that the treaty has played in shaping the American legal system.
The London Session opened June 11th with a ceremony at Central Hall Westminster followed by a reception at the Middle Temple and the Inns of Court. A number of events were scheduled for four days, including receptions at the Guildhall and the Royal Court of Justice, and a garden party at Winfield House, the residence of the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.
The London Sessions have a substantive focus as well. The schedule encompassed education programs with experienced legal minds. One speaker included Cherie Blair, a British barrister, and wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The ceremonies included a full dose of pomp and circumstance. Jeana was invited to attend as an American delegate by the ABA.
