Get to know more about Joel Carney

Q: What made you want to become an attorney?

A: My Dad is an attorney, and my Grandma was a Judge so I always had an interest in the law and grew up around lawyers. I think I saw early on how people valued my Dad’s opinion and knew he could help them with their circumstances and make things better. I wanted to be like my Dad and so I followed in his footsteps.

Q: What has been your biggest success as an attorney?

A: I’ve had some great success with settlements and court verdicts, but I think I’m most proud of helping to grow the firm and recruiting an incredible slate of attorneys and support staff while increasing the firm’s revenue every year.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being an attorney?

A: I enjoy helping clients navigate through their most serious problems and challenges and finding solutions to problems as quickly as possible. People need attorneys and I think being approachable and a good listener helps me excel at my job.

I also love Alternative Dispute Resolution and became a American Arbitration Association Panel Arbitrator in 2019. I hope to continue to expand that practice and I also plan on launching a mediation practice soon.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Goosmann Law Firm?

A: My favorite thing about Goosmann is the people who work here, and the culture we’ve instilled on our offices. We intentionally work on making the firm a great place to work and have people set goals, reach goals so they can be the best they can be both personally and professionally.

Q: What do you enjoy about litigation?

A: I take a peacemaker approach to the litigation process. I try to talk settlement or resolution as early on in the process because clients want quick resolution and if we can be efficient they will ultimately be happier. Being reasonable leads to the litigation process being much more economical for the client rather than if I took a scorched earth approach to litigation.

Q: Did something influence your interest in Creditors Rights/ Bankruptcy practice areas? If so, what?

A: I’ve always enjoyed the code areas of the law but early on in my practice I realized that the bankruptcy bar was a smaller group of lawyers and there was a great collegiality because of the frequency of our dealings.

Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of the office/courtroom?

Joel and his wife Shaini, spend the majority of their free time watching the activities and his children’s sporting events. When Joel isn’t chasing the kids, he enjoys golfing, skiing and traveling. He is an avid sports fan with a love for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Creighton Bluejays, Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Royals.

Q: What is your favorite quote?

So let us begin anew -- remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate. Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us.
