Some might think it's coincidental that we’re coming off of an election almost straight into Veterans Day. But for those who served, it’s the most appropriate timing of all. We were able to exercise our freedom to vote, or to choose not to vote, because of the veterans who have given their service, and in far too many cases, given their lives in defense of freedom.
The sacrifices of our veterans are what allow us the freedom to live in this country in relative safety and security. That’s one reason that groups all around the region are honoring veterans in their own way. My own American Legion Post #319 will be holding an honorary service for veterans today at the Dakota Valley High School in North Sioux City to recognize and take time for reflection on the sacrifice of those who have served our country. This past Sunday our Legion Post also honored local Veterans with a small service at our monthly pancake breakfast at the North Sioux City Seniors Center.
There are many brave souls, both men and women who have, and do serve our country. People you don’t expect. It could be your loved one or people you casually see in your town on a daily basis. It might be the greeter at Wal-Mart whose back is bent with age, many years past his service in the Vietnam War. It might be the young woman in a college class who takes off for National Guard drills once a month.
We work here at the Goosmann Law Firm with Veterans like Chris Barondeau who drove a bomb buggy in the Iraq war when he was 19. Chris still continues to give his service to our country in the Nebraska National Guard, where he currently serves as a battalion staff officer.
I can tell you from having proudly worn the uniform of the United States Army myself, there are so many people who touch your life on a daily basis who raised their right hand and felt the butterflies and pride as they swore that oath to lay down their life in service of freedom and their country. They all deserve our thanks for what we have.
This Veteran's Day, I hope you’ll join me in reflection and recognition of our brave servicemen and women, past and present. It’s an honor well deserved.
