April 15, 2013 - Any electric line which operates 69,000 volts or more (over a mile long and outside city limits) requires a franchise, or permit, from the Iowa Utilities Board. The process in obtaining this franchise can be quite complex and cumbersome. It is important to follow the law and necessary steps so that obtaining this franchise allows the project to move along. Examples of the steps Attorneys take to advance the project include:

  • Hold an informational meeting
  • Petition the Iowa Utilities Board for a franchise
  • Complete necessary notifications within strict deadlines
  • Hearing with the Iowa Utilities Board
  • Determine just compensation
  • Record the easement
