September 16, 2013. Architects, engineers, general contractors and other construction professionals can jeopardize projects, open the door for serious penalties, and increase their litigation risks when they fail to get properly licensed. Problems typically arise when these professionals expand into other states. Every state has laws which regulate the licensure of construction-related companies; the differences from one state to another, and related consequences for violations, vary dramatically. If you are venturing into another state, make sure you are doing so legally. The State by State Guide to Architect, Engineer, and Contractor Licensing (for which I drafted the South Dakota chapter), provides a detailed overview of all 50 states’ licensure requirements.
