May 15, 2014. A worker in Italy lost his fingers while working at a mozzarella cheese factory. In the United States, OSHA workplace safety rules prohibit employees from sticking fingers, hands, arms or any other body parts into energized equipment. An employee must first de-energize the machine (properly shut the power source off) and follow company lock out/tag procedures (including verifiable employee training), before an employee exposes his/her body parts to moving parts and energized equipment. Compliance by employers with the OSHA lockout/tagout safety program is one of the most important safety programs in a manufacturing environment. This program requires employer diligence and constant oversight in order to avoid accidents and injuries.
