Nebraska Enacts Nebraska Hemp Farming Act

Earlier this week, Nebraska enacted the Nebraska Hemp Farming Act, which allows the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) to regulate the growing, cultivation, processing, and brokering of industrial hemp.

Starting, Monday February 3, 2020, the NDA will be accepting applications for licenses to allow Nebraskans to grow and deal with hemp.  Specifically, there are separate licenses for the growing and cultivation, as well as the handling of hemp.

The act also provides for a number of regulations and restrictions relating to both the licensing itself, as well as stringent requirements for hemp’s legal growers.

According to hempbasics.com, on a per acre basis, hemp can produce two to three times as much fiber as cotton, with fiber being softer and more durable as well.  The site also adds that hemp can efficiently be used to produce paper, plastic, ethanol fuel, paint, and hundreds of other products.  The site also adds that Presidents Washington and Jefferson both grew hemp as a crop.

Goosmann Law Firm regularly handles agricultural issues as well as regulatory licenses for its clients.  If you’re interested in potentially obtaining a hemp license, please give us a call and we can discuss the process.
