 Job Description: 

Goosmann Law Firm has an open position for a Controller.  This position is responsible for all aspects of accounting management for the Firm.  The Controller will report to the Firm’s Chief Operating Officer.  In this role, the Controller is responsible for maximizing the return on financial assets, documenting and maintaining compliance with financial policies, and establishing and enforcing financial controls.  The Controller must have solid communication, technology, analytical and management skills, along with a comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).  A CPA designation is a mandatory requirement for this position (inactive is acceptable).

BASIC FUNCTIONS INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Supervising the monthly close-out process for the Firm, including the reconciliation of all accounts and the preparation of monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Understanding of law firm accounting, including trust accounting rules & principles
  • Communicating financial results to the executive team
  • Preparing annual budgets for the Firm and updating these budgets to forecasts throughout the year
  • Preparing monthly comparative analyses of financial statements versus budgets and presentation of these analyses to the executive team
  • Managing the annual audit and tax preparation for the Firm
  • Controlling cash management and creating a forward liquidity projection analysis
  • Guiding financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures
  • Protecting assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls
  • Complying with all federal, state and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation and enforcing adherence to requirements and filing financial reports
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of financial information and business plans
  • Managing relationships with service providers, including banking, insurance, payroll service providers, attorneys, and accountants
  • Managing and developing the back-office accounting staff including training, disciplining, mentoring, and appraising them of their performance

 ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Issuing timely and complete financial statements
  • Preparing special reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends for the company, its affiliates and partners
  • Managing the production of the annual budget
  • Maintaining a documented accounting policies and procedures and month end checklist
  • Preparing and reviewing monthly journal entries
  • Ensuring appropriate controls for:
  • Payment for accounts payables
  • Invoicing and prompt collection of accounts receivables
  • Approval and timely processing of payroll
  • Reconciliation of bank accounts
  • Approval and timely processing of debt payments
  • Maintaining the chart of accounts for the Firm Maintaining an orderly accounting filing system Reviewing contracts, as needed

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing additional support to Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Executive Officer and other members of the executive team, as needed
  • Communicating in a professional and courteous manner with clients, third party contractors, peers, subordinates, and executives
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited University
  • A CPA designation (inactive is acceptable)
  • Experience with personnel management
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Critical thinking, analytical and management skills a must
  • Impeccable organizational skills and the ability to prioritize
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • High proficiency in MS Office, including advanced EXCEL skills
  • Familiarity with Quick Books and other accounting programs or software
