Downtown Partners in Sioux City, Iowa was a recipient of a $25,000 Gilchrist Foundation grant to support the Sioux City Mural Project. The purpose of the Sioux City Mural Project is to foster creativity, innovation and the continued revitalization of the arts in our city through the creation and installation of murals on building facades in the downtown area.
The selected properties are Goosmann Law Firm (501 Douglas Street) and M’s on 4th (1021 4th Street). The mural on the Goosmann property will be visible coming into downtown along 5th Street from the west, and can be seen from the Historic Pearl District. Goosmann Law Firm Founder, CEO, Attorney and Managing Partner, Jeana Goosmann expressed, “The Goosmann Law Firm is excited to participate in the Sioux City Mural Project. We are honored to offer the side of our newly renovated building at 501 Douglas as a canvass for Martin Ron and look forward to seeing his creation”. M’s on 4th is located in the center of the popular Historic 4th Street District. Owners Dan Myers and Vernon Meyer share, “We are excited and grateful to the Gilchrist Foundation for their gift toward this project. As we continue to make enhancements both inside and outside our restaurant; this will not only beautify our building but Historic 4th Street.”
The muralists, Martin Ron from Buenos Aires, Argentina and Jenna Brownlee from Des Moines, Iowa, were chosen because of their extensive experience with murals, how their artistic style reflects/complements that of Sioux City’s urban landscape and their geographical and cultural inclusiveness. The muralists will accomplish their work between August 2017 and May 2018, with each mural requiring two to four weeks to complete. During the muralists' stays in Sioux City, they will have opportunities to engage with the Sioux City community about their work on the Sioux City Mural Project. A dedication ceremony will be scheduled upon completion of the murals.
