Perhaps Starbucks should stick to coffee rather than taking positions on unrelated food products. The retail coffee giant has recently reiterated its position on various animal welfare issues in a policy statement that shows there is still confusion about how food animals are raised. Should we be surprised??? In the updated policy statement dated Dec. 18, which was sent to news outlets and championed by the Humane Society of the United States, Starbucks listed as a current area of focus, “eliminating the use of artificial growth hormones and fast-growing practices for poultry.” There is one problem with this assertion. The Food and Drug Administration has prohibited poultry growers from using artificial growth hormones since the 1950s. Instead of pontificating over politically correct fashionable trends to promote a retail product to a targeted audience, perhaps Starbucks should focus more on making sure its latte coffee is timely prepared and hot to drink. Excuse me – not TOO HOT!!!
