June 6, 2014. Iowa law requires all parties in a divorce (with children) or modification case take a court-approved parenting class. Interestingly, the law does not include unmarried parents in the code provision, but most courts still impose the requirement.
The class is a four hour class and must be completed within 45 days of service. Each party is required to pay approximately $40 to take the class and must submit a certification of completion of the class prior to the court granting the decree or final order. There is a live class option or an online class option.
The class is meant to educate and sensitize the parties to the needs of the children. The topics covered in the class focus on co-parenting and how to communicate with children in a divorce situation.
