June 20, 2014. There is little, if any, margin for error when companies have a breakdown in their operations resulting in environmental violations impacting on the land, air and waterways. Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced he has filed a lawsuit in Barry County Circuit Court against Tyson Foods for the unlawful dumping of untreated industrial wastewater into a Southwest Missouri stream that led to the killing of at least 100,000 fish. According to Koster, beginning on May 16, the Tyson Foods facility at Monett discharged wastewater containing a highly acidic animal feed supplement into the city of Monett's sewer system. The discharge caused the city's biological wastewater treatment system to fail, and contaminated water containing a high level of ammonia flowed into Clear Creek, leading to the fish kill. Fines can reach millions of dollars and compliance orders imposed going forward will impose a heavy burden on companies that don't manage their processes as they should.
