November 21, 2013. Problems with _______ (you fill in the blank). No matter what the problem there are solutions and strategies to solve the problem. Not all solutions are comfortable. As a result most people choose to delay by default and avoid the problem. I refer to this as default delay. Delay can be a strategy, but it is only a good strategy when the decision is to do nothing and time may improve the situation. Unlike wine, most problems do not improve with time. One of the key strengths of a top performing CEO is they confront problems, engage the right people to assess the situation, and make decisions to take action. Top CEOs do not fear problems or avoid uncomfortable situations. They continuously do what is outside the comfort zone. It is not comfortable to shut down an unprofitable plant, fire a high performing sales VP that is a bully, sue for breach of contract, secure a new vendor because you outgrew your current one, reinvent your product line in the wake of changing regulations, deal with health insurance price increases, or find a new supply chain because your current provider is entering your territory. The list of uncomfortable CEO responsibilities is endless. Excellent CEOs get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Part of what makes a great business leader is the ability to make decisions and cause action. So- decide and act, even if you decide to delay and the action is wait and see.
