Recent reports by USDA for 2013 U.S. corn and soybean production states that corn production reached a new all-time high and 2013’s soybean crop was the third largest on record. For 2013 the corn crop was reported at 13.925 billion bushels. This represents a substantial increase from 2012 production. For 2012 USDA reported total corn production at, 10.780 billion bushels, 2012 figures also included an average yield of 123.4 bushels per acre with a harvested area of 87.4 million acres. However, the record crop still fell short of analysts’ initial projections concerning the 2013 crop. U.S. corn production in 2013 saw an average yield of 158.8 bushels per acre, with a harvested area of 87.668 million acres. Planted acreage totaled 95.365 million acres. Additionally, multiple states recorded record yields, including record ear counts in numerous states. Soybean production figures for 2013 totaled 3.289 billion bushels. 2013’s production figures represent an increase of over 250 million bushels from 2012. The 2013 soybean crop saw an average yield of 43.3 bushels per acre with a harvested area of 75.869 million acres. The total planted acreage came out to 76.533 million acres.
