October 1, 2013. In an effort to continue to spur the growth and development of advanced biofuels (i.e. biofuels produced from renewable biomass, other than corn kernel starch), USDA has recently awarded 188 producers with $15.5 million in payments. The payments are made possible through the USDA’s Advanced Biofuel Payment Program. The goal of the program is to provide producers with payments to help support and expand production of advanced biofuels.
Advanced biofuels are produced from renewable biomass crops such as cellulose, sugar and starch (other than ethanol derived from corn kernel starch), hemicelluloses, lignin, waste materials, biogas, butanol, diesel-equivalent fuel, sugarcane, and nonfood crops such as poplar trees or switchgrass.
Advanced biofuels will continue to play a key role in the development of the biofuels industry. Furthermore, revisions to the renewable fuel standard, which the Environmental Protection Agency hopes to have finalized by the end of November, will be critical in helping to expand the production of advanced biofuels.
