Not only must agricultural producers deal, day in and day out, with the practical challenges associated with feeding a growing global population, they must meet these challenges in an environment increasingly regulated by governments, local, state, and federal. It is critically important that agricultural producers stay well-informed on current laws and regulations that can impact their agricultural operation.

Fortunately, government entities and organizations recognize, at least to a degree, the challenges of compliance with this labyrinth of laws and regulations presents. As such, they have taken steps to provide access to resources designed to keep you informed of laws and regulations that could impact your agricultural operation, including providing information on relevant changes to current laws and regulations.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken the lead on providing agricultural producers the resources necessary to review laws and regulations that could impact their operation. More specifically, the EPA maintains several websites (and documents) providing easy access to basic guidance concerning current laws and regulations. This includes the Agricultural Laws webpage which provides a list of major statutes containing the most important environmental requirements that affect the agricultural community. Additionally, this page also hosts a link to the EPA’s Agriculture Regulatory Matrix which provides a succinct, general description of the EPA’s requirements for both regulatory and voluntary programs.

These tools provide a valuable resource to agricultural producers as they attempt to comply with the laws and regulations related to their agricultural operation. Note though that the regulatory environment is constantly in flux. As such, it requires that agricultural producers continually monitor regulatory requirements to ensure compliance.
